riders. trains back up and running in an half hour. all lines have been shutdown at west portal and embarcadero after reports of a body laying on the tracks. we have christie smith with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, and marla. this was a rough start to the morning commute. trains not running for three hours this morning. within the last 30 minutes, things turned around. about 160,000 commuters use the route each day and half were inconvenienced. emergency trucks lined market street this morning near the montgomery station and downstairs, muni metro riders were turned away. >> they said there was a medical emergency and take another route. >> reporter: what does that do to your morning? >> i have to take the bus. >> reporter: about 7:30 this

morning, the j-church muni train hit a man in a restricted area. >> the man was walking through the catwalk at embarcadero and montgomery. that's where the contact was made. >> reporter: riders saw this vital station in downtown san francisco shutdown as the medical examiner and police v investigated. b.a.r.t. offered honorable tickets to help out with the ride. >> i could not get on to muni. they said it's closed. >> reporter: what did they tell you to do? >> go upstairs and take the shuttle. i'm not sure. >> reporter: commuters tried their best to sort it out between street cars and the bus. how long have you been looking for the shuttle? >> the last ten minutes. >> reporter: have you seen one

yet? >> no. >> reporter: a muni spokesperson said they will review security tapes to see how the man got inside the tunnel. he was actually several hundred feet in there. they tell me they will keep running the shuttles for a while until things smooth out. they say for the short-term, to expect delays. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, christie. the chp is patrolling the streets following the order from governor brown to help increase patrols in high crime areas. so far this year, oakland has 108 homicides. the chp has worked with oakland police before between 2007 and 2010. the program ended because of a lack of funding. this partnership will last for at least three months. marla, that help coming as an oakland community grieves the death of a popular business

owner. a memorial growing for 53-year-old wilber bartley. officers say bartley was shot and killed wednesday night as he was closing up the shop. he was known for working with customers have trouble paying bills and helped with disadvantaged children. >> if someone could tak his life for money or whatever, we still don't know what it was, that's crazy to me. we need to know. >> police right now still searching for bartley's killer. the city is offering a reward for up to $15,000 for any tips that lead to an arrest. the trial of a san jose principal could go to the jury today. lin endron is on trial for failing to report abuses against

children. she admitted she knew about parents concerns with the teacher. the teacher was later arrested and charged with committing lewd acts on five children. the man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and tell the jury he has no regrets. nathan burris defending tcharge that he killed two at the san mateo toll plaza. yesterday, he admitted he was the shooter and he said he still feels hatred for the victims. burris will return to the stand on monday. if convicted, he would be eligible for the death penalty. a bay area mother will wait several more weeks to find if a bone fragment belongs to her missing daughter. a lab in arizona is testing the bone to see if it belongs to

moving to decision 2012. the sprint to the finish. we are looking at the campaign schedules for president obama and governor romney from now until election day. they are making a mad dash seeking swing state votes. we have tracie potts tracking it all from washington. >> reporter: new this morning, the nation's unemployment rate is 7.9%, up slightly from a month ago as expected although 171,000 jobs were created in october, plus 134,000 not originally reported in september. >> this is a great report. >> it is consistent with the consumer confidence numbers.

it illustrates the break we have seen. consumers have been saying we have more jobs and we're feeling better. >> reporter: both candidates land in ohio today. so far here is the travel schedule. governor romney visits seven states, including a rally in ohio with 100 supporters and politicians and celebrities. in virginia, a make up from hurricane sandy. >> he was the other day talking about saving characters on "sesame street" and playing word game was my name. >> reporter: president obama also visits seven states between now and election day with a focus on ohio. his must-win state. he'll be there every day between now and the election making his closing argument high lighting higher home prices and overseas.

arrived at a set of phone calls stating, "are you working?" that is up from 7.8% in september. where the romney campaign will have traction is not that change month to month. it is comparing the unemployment rate now from when mr. obama took office. 7.8% on the day he took office and 7.9% now. that is literally no change over four years. president obama took office, really, at the worst possible moment in the economic crisis. the details tend to get lost in the political race. thanks, scott. new this morning, the wait is over. the ipad mini hits store shelves this morning and people camped out for the new ipadre lea rele but not as many in the past.

bob redell has more. >> reporter: about 50 people lined up in front of the apple store in los gatos this morning. a smaller line than the ones that have gone down the block for previous product releases. why is there not as much excitement? >> because the other tablets are available. you have the kindle and the google. >> reporter: comparable and a $329 price tag for the mini. when the doors opened at 8:00 this morning, price didn't seem to matter. the cash came out in wads. >> i have been waiting for so long to get one and everyone says get a kindle. it doesn't have the same abilities. >> reporter: the mini is half the weight of an ipad and can fit in the palm of your hand. it doesn't understand why israel had his hands full with both. >> travel size. >> reporter: travel size? why not pick?
